The Importance of Education – Episode 148

Listen to the podcast here:

Today on the Wealth Standard Radio we welcome a very special guest, Andy Tanner. Andy Tanner is an investor who specializes in education. Andy and Patrick talk about the importance of education and the way that it is undervalued and poorly delivered in our society.

Once on a flight Andy happened to be sitting next to a surgeon, who spent the majority of the flight telling him all about his job. After a few hours had gone by and the they were about to land, the surgeon turned to Andy and said “So, what do you do?”. Andy told him that he was an investor who specialized in education. The surgeon said “If you had to tell me, right now, in one sentence, what I should do with my money, what would you say?”. All he didn’t say it aloud, Andy realized that the question was absurd. You wouldn’t ask a surgeon to tell you, in one sentence, how to perform a bypass, because you would know in advance that would be silly. And yet investing and money management has turned into an advice based industry.

The reality is that it takes experience and education to be able to successfully invest your money, and that there are no more short and easy answers with money than there are with medicine! That’s why finding ways to educate ourselves and our families, outside of the mainstream education system, is so important.

Andy and Patrick also discuss the importance of a hands on education that happens outside of a classroom, and how that can prepare us better for the real world. They talk about a number of successful people whose education has been non typical. Finally, they talk about some resources that you can use to educate yourself, including Andy Tanner’s book, 401Kaos.

The Cone of Learning – Episode 140

Listen to the podcast here:

Don’t miss the 140th episode of the Wealth Standard Radio, our first episode to be recorded at sea! Join Patrick Donohoe, Ryan Lee, and Brad Gibbs as they talk about their experience at The Summit at Sea, a summit where like minded entrepreneurs and achievers can come together to share ideas and learn from the best.

Tune in as Patrick talks about his biggest takeaway from the conference: “The Cone of Learning”.  This concept was developed by Robert Kiyosaki, the best selling author of Rich Dad Poor Dad, and describes the way that different people learn. At the top of the cone (the smallest percentage of people) is reading, with “Do the Real Thing” (real life practice), down at the bottom, representing the highest number of people who learn best that way.

Patrick, Brad, and Ryan talk about how our school systems now expect everyone to learn in the same way – the least common way – by reading, and punish anyone who doesn’t conform. Unfortunately, real life doesn’t conform to the experiences that are taught at school. In real life, there are more than one answers and more than one ways of doing things – unlike on a multiple choice test in school.

Can the Post Office Be a Bank? And Other Questions for A Changing World – Episode 136

Listen to the podcast here:

Join Patrick Donohoe and Noah Kelsch on this episode of the Wealth Standard Radio as they talk about the post office becoming a bank, volatility in the markets, and personal motivations to improve.

The post office is fifty billion dollars in debt – and for most business, that would mean bankruptcy. However, instead the post office is considering taking on some of the services of a bank, such as quick lending. If you’re the postmaster general, this could seem like a great idea. You have banks all over the country, and it could be brilliant way to offset the debt that you have on the books. However, does it mean that the public will foot the bill (again) if their plan fails?

Patrick and Noah also talk about the volatility of the market, and why people continue to participate when they understand the odds but don’t understand what they’re doing. The hypothesize that our fundamental need for uncertainty pushes us to invest the same way some people like to gamble. They discuss the role of fear in our financial decisions and world-views.

Finally, Noah and Patrick talk about what helps them personally to improve. How important is personal development to you in your personal life? They discuss what motivates them to keep going and to keep meeting challenges and what stops other people from pursuing their goals. They also discuss what to do to start taking advantage of the opportunities that are all around us.
