Investing Institutionally for Free – Episode 151

Listen to the podcast here:

How would you like to be able to invest institutionally for free? Today Patrick Donohoe and guest Christian Allen talk about the somewhat complex topic of investing institutionally for free. First of all, Patrick and Christian discuss the importance of being able to look at the world with a positive spin and “look at how much is working”. They talk about the complex webs that surround us and enables us to function, and the importance of avoiding our natural tendency to be afraid and ‘doomsday thinking’. Once we can overcome our fears, we can start to prepare for success and take appropriate and well thought through risks.

They also discuss the importance of education, and finding solutions, not products. They talk about the importance of asking yourself questions – why I am doing this, what do I want out of this? Patrick talks about the moral obligation he feels he has to over-educate when it comes to sales.

Patrick and Christian then discuss the difference between whole life insurance and stock companies. Whole life insurance companies are beholden to stockholders, and stock companies are beholden to policyholders. They discuss how whole life insurance companies are able to make long term plans that pay off as far as fifty years into the future, while in contrast stock companies are forced to make decisions that make them look good quarter to quarter. Finally, they discuss the importance of preparing yourself to take advantage of the opportunities that inevitably will come when disruption occurs.

Live From Jekyll Island – Episode 150

Listen to the podcast here:

Today’s Wealth Standard Radio Podcast is coming to you live from Jekyll Island, the place where a group of the world’s wealthiest and most powerful men came together in the nineteen hundreds to plan the very first federal reserve. Patrick talks about the effects that the federal reserve has had on the stability of the economy, our lifestyles, and on the national debt.

Before the federal reserve and the central bank, the amount of money the government could print was limited – now it is completely arbitrary. As much or as little money can be printed as politicians desire. This means that inflated currency can enter our economy and temporarily boost the economy and solve economic problems. However, this temporary wealth comes at a greater cost – inflation and the creation of a bubble that must eventually burst.

Patrick talks about the importance of keeping our personal finance on solid ground and living in reality. He cautions against spending money you don’t have or expect to earn later. Although there are some benefits to readily available money through loans or through the federal reserve, Patrick talks about why we need to carefully consider the significant downfalls or those options before eagerly accepting their supposed benefits.

Disruptive Technology with Zach Olson, CEO of Bookly.co – Episode 149

Listen to the podcast here:

Welcome to the Wealth Standard Radio! Today we get to hear from Zach Olson, founder and CEO of Bookly.co and a speaker at the upcoming Cashflow Wealth Summit on business best practices. Zach and Patrick talk about Zach’s first business, a skate shop he opened up after he realized that, although he would probably never be a professional skater, he would still love to be in the business.

Although he loved skating, Zach quickly realized that the retail experience was never going to be what he wanted. After a few twists and turns, he eventually opened his current business, Bookly.co, which provides accounting software to small businesses.

Patrick and Zach talk about the importance of delivering the user experience. For example, Uber was able to dominate the market in the way they did not just because their idea was a good one, but because they provided a seamless user experience that drew people to their product. While bookly.co provides excellent accounting software, it is also working to provide an unparalled user experience that drives people to the product.

Finally, Zach and Patrick both talk about the importance of disruption. Every time there has been an advance in human technology like tools, wheel, trade farming, etc.,  there has been disruption that has caused people to have to change the way they live, possible put old competitors out of business and out of work, and generally caused difficult change that is ultimately necessary for growth. In business, it’s important to move with the flow of a new, disruptive technology so that you can stay ahead of each new wave of knowledge and technology.

The Importance of Education – Episode 148

Listen to the podcast here:

Today on the Wealth Standard Radio we welcome a very special guest, Andy Tanner. Andy Tanner is an investor who specializes in education. Andy and Patrick talk about the importance of education and the way that it is undervalued and poorly delivered in our society.

Once on a flight Andy happened to be sitting next to a surgeon, who spent the majority of the flight telling him all about his job. After a few hours had gone by and the they were about to land, the surgeon turned to Andy and said “So, what do you do?”. Andy told him that he was an investor who specialized in education. The surgeon said “If you had to tell me, right now, in one sentence, what I should do with my money, what would you say?”. All he didn’t say it aloud, Andy realized that the question was absurd. You wouldn’t ask a surgeon to tell you, in one sentence, how to perform a bypass, because you would know in advance that would be silly. And yet investing and money management has turned into an advice based industry.

The reality is that it takes experience and education to be able to successfully invest your money, and that there are no more short and easy answers with money than there are with medicine! That’s why finding ways to educate ourselves and our families, outside of the mainstream education system, is so important.

Andy and Patrick also discuss the importance of a hands on education that happens outside of a classroom, and how that can prepare us better for the real world. They talk about a number of successful people whose education has been non typical. Finally, they talk about some resources that you can use to educate yourself, including Andy Tanner’s book, 401Kaos.

The Perpetual Wealth Strategy – Episode 147

Listen to the podcast here:

When you look at what we’ve been told to do financially, and you look at where we are as a society, something is clearly not walking! Today Patrick Donohoe and guests talk about their overall strategy for financial security and prosperity: The Perpetual Wealth System. The Perpetual Wealth System has three major stages, usually (but not always) taking place at different points and ages in a person’s life.

The first stage of the Perpetual Wealth Strategy is growth. The growth stage is about accumulating money, accumulating savings, and keeping your money safe from the fluctuations of wall street, and hopefully out of 401(k)s.

The second stage of the Perpetual Wealth Strategy is income. It’s incredibly common as people grow older for them to realize that living off of their savings is an incredible stressful and sometimes even non-existent option. The solution to this problem is to find some way, whether through starting a business or through real estate, to maintain income into our retirement.

The final stage of the Perpetual Wealth Strategy is legacy. The legacy stage is about insuring a future for your children, and about finding out the best ways and things that you can do with your money to leave something meaningful behind when you go. As much as we all want ourselves to be financially secure, we want our families to be financially secure even more, and leaving a proper legacy is a great way to insure that they are.
